IN THE COUNTRY

At the Landis Farm on Shanley Road, straw was being spread next to rows of strawberry plants. I've seen this done, before, but always assumed that it was to keep weeds down:

Not so!

Kim explained that the straw serves three purposes: 1. to keep mud from splattering on the berries when it rains; 2. to provide a clean kneeling row when the berries are being picked; and 3. to keep birds from getting to the berries first!

Watch for boxes of berries to appear on the picnic table next to the Landis' driveway! Yesterday, there were several bunches of asparagus there -- some came home with me!

View on Lewis Road.

The alfalfa's been harvested and corn is up about 6".

RIGHT NOW

It's 44.4 degrees with a few clouds.

From WKTV:

Sunshine both Saturday and Sunday. A weak cold front will pass uneventfully through the region on Saturday, giving us nothing more than a few extra clouds. Highs expected to be in the mid 70s. Slightly cooler on Sunday, but still nice, with highs near 70. An isolated thunderstorm is possible late in the day on Sunday, otherwise the weekend is expected to be dry.

Feeling more like summer heading into next week. An unsettled but warm pattern, with highs in the 70s and low 80s, with the chance of storms Tuesday through Thursday.

FOR THE RECORD

Have a Great Weekend, Everyone!
