It's 58 degrees and seems to have stopped raining - finally!

"I must be LOST, 'cause I've been FOUND!"

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN

"I'm a friendly, medium brown dog with camouflage collar and attached broken leash clip. I've been at the Barnes Homestead on the corner of Rte 20 and Beaver Creek for 3 days. If you want me back, you can reach Brian Barnes at 841-8256 or Tom Barnes 841-4880 (I visit both homes. ) Thank you!"

Just a quick post, this morning, to help the above "writer" and to remind you that there's plenty going on at St. Bernard's Catholic Church both today and tomorrow:

From Fr. Tom: "Proceeds of these events will help defray the cost of sending a group of our teenagers to a week-long youth conference at the University of Notre Dame (yea, the one in Indiana!!!!)"

- and there's music to please everyone:

Kelly Beloin sent me this poster, saying: "Bob Belouin’s band, "Crushing June," is playing at
"12 North" Friday night. He plays lead guitar and sings."

"And then there were none."

We can't call in Agatha Christie, so we'll never know what happened, but - when Jody arrived yesterday afternoon and looked at the empty nest, he simply shook his head and, rather sadly, took down his stepladder and and tripod. Even the last of the little vireos was gone.

All we can say is, "We let nature take it's course."

If you are watching the nest of an unusual variety of bird, please let me know and I'll forward the word to Jody!

One day when the sun was shining, Jeff Reynolds took this picture in the Library Garden with his "new little Fuji point and shoot" which he says he "likes a lot."

(Thanks, Jeff!)

I think that Jeff has a great "eye" for color and composition - and now I know where he got it! His mother, Rhea Evans Reynolds, is an extraordinry painter ---- a "colorist" ---- and several dozen of her huge canvases are currently on display at the Cooperstown Art Association.

Click HERE to see some of the works in this retrospective!

(The colors just blow my mind!)

Thursday

To Linda Furner from Frances Ditch.

**************************

It's Garbage Day!

51 degrees and quite drippy.

............ but Summer starts on Sunday!

(Click the image for better effect!)

From WKTV's meteorologist: " Clouds, showers and thunderstorms continue on Thursday, along with breezy conditions. Highs Thursday will be in the upper 60's.

Humidity will increase and a muggy feel to the air will be in the forecast for Thursday Night into Friday. A few breaks of sun are likely Friday but a few popup showers or thunderstorms are possible in the afternoon. Highs 70-75.

Another storm system will bring a period of rain and some thunderstorms to the area on Saturday. At this point it looks like we ought to see some breaks of sun on Father's Day. There may be a shower or t-storm but it doesn't look like an all-day rain event. Highs will be in the mid to upper 70's."

YESTERDAY IN THE PARK

Vendors had barely set up their displays when shoppers arrived, looking at everything from pet supplies ............

........... to fruits, vegetables and crafts from Long View Farms ..........

............. to more booths of live plants, silk flower arrangements, home made jams and cookies and handmade baskets and jewelry.

A topic of conversation was how nice the Bulletin Board looks painted white and - isn't that new plastic in the "windows?"

(Blame a dirty windshield on the blogcar for the haziness of the picture!)

At the other end of the village, the shrubbery in the planting around Municipal Hall has all been trimmed and weeded.

*************************************

When Jody Hildreth arrived at Whiskey Hollow yesterday afternoon, he took one look at the Vireo nest and shook his head in dismay. "We've had calamity!" he said, and I - of course - thought that vireo chicks were losing out, already.

That wasn't the case. Two vireo chicks AND the cow bird chick were gone!

Jody searched the ground, but found no sign of them or of any sort of unusual activity.

The mother bird was unusually "skittish," and took a long time to return to the nest with food for the one remaining chick.

She brought a selection of bugs ........

......... and then the father brought a yummy green worm!

While Jody took pictures, I came back to the computer and read whatever I could find about Vireos and their enemies. Tops on the list: red squirrels - and there are plenty of those around - and chipmunks and even bluejays.

This is just NOT working out the way we thought it would!

All we can hope for now is that the predator that "got" the other babies doesn't come back.

This evening at 7:30:

Mohawk Valley Blues

at the high school:

a fundraiser for the band, color guard and swing choir's trip to Disney.

Just as I had typed those four lines, the little "you've got mail" flag on my desktop started to bounce up and down and THIS is what was in the mail --- what great timing!

"Dear Mrs. Brown

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you personally for all the publicity on your blog that you have provided the Brothertown Music Boosters since we announced the W.C.S. Marching Band and Swing Choir’s performance trip to Walt Disney World next month. While we have been discussing the possibility of this trip for years our decision to make it a reality took place almost two years ago. To make the trip happen we decided that we would need to fundraise over a two year period so last summer we sponsored a non performance and shortened band trip to N.Y.C. to save funds for this year’s attempt at Disney. It was not our intention to attempt this trip during a year when the economy unfortunately went south long before our kids did.

78 students along with 5 directors and 17 chaparones will be leaving for Disney July 24th aboard two coaches. The total cost of the Disney Trip is approximately $79,500. The Music Boosters decided early that if we were to pull this trip together that the price per student would need to be kept as low as possible. Last fall we decided to put $20,000 toward the trip which left the students/parent cost at $660 each. Since last fall, due to some unforeseen expenses, the Booster’s portion of the trip has risen to nearly $23,000. In addition we have promised financial support to as many 7 students that were unable to attend due to money issues. To date we have worked diligently to assure that no members of the Marching Band, Color Guard and Swing Choir are missing this performance due to lack of money. This effort brought the Boosters an additional $3,200 of expense, bringing our total cost to over $26,000. As always this community (the entire Waterville School District) has responded and we are within $2,000 of our goal. Over the last few weeks alone we have received nearly $2,400 in donations that are being used help the students in needs.

Tonight at 7:30 the Brothertown Music Boosters along with the Mohawk Valley Blues Society are sponsoring a concert at the High School auditorium. The concert will feature the Mohawk Valley All-Star Blue Band and the W.C.S. Jazz Band will be performing as their opening act. The W.C.S. Art students have prepared posters of Blues Legends that will on display in the lobby and the Boosters will be there with refreshments along with a Disney basket to raffle. Tickets are only $5 and will be available at the door.

We again want to thank you for all of your help with publicity on your blog and look forward to sending daily updated from Walt Disney World next month.

The Brothertown Music Boosters"

(Gee! That's nice! Thank You!)

Having done a fair amount of fund-raising over the years - and also because I'm a life-long musician and a great fan of the Disneyworld Experience - I have to congratulate the Boosters for all of the fund-raising events that they have sponsored to make this trip possible! If there are any members of the community who have not been able to attend events but would like to make a contribution, you may mail a check to Brothertown Music Boosters; P.O. Box #36, Waterville, N.Y. 13480.

It's Recyclables Day and nearly 60 degrees.

FARMERS' MARKET TODAY

11:00 - 5:00 in the park

WKTV's forecast: "Quiet weather continues tomorrow with a sunny start to the day. Clouds begin to thicken up by mid afternoon into the evening, out ahead of an approaching storm system. Highs on Wednesday in the upper 70s.

That storm system will kick off showers and thunderstorms as a warm front crosses the state on Wednesday Night and Thursday. Highs Thursday will be in the upper 60's, but humidity will increase and a muggy feel to the air will be in the forecast for Thursday Night into Friday."

********

In the morning mail was a plea for help from the resident of 178 W. Bacon Street whose rusty, orange wheelbarrow has disappeared!

"I used the wheelbarrow yesterday for green waste day since everything has to be in containers. However I went to the front yard this morning and my garbage can I used was still there but someone had taken my wheelbarrow. I wasn't throwing it out but merely using it as a "container" which I had done many times before."

Perhaps there's a blog reader who can make the wheelbarrow reappear just as magically as it left!? It's return will be appreciated, I'm sure!

NEW VIEWS

First it was back yard dividers, then came sidewalks, and now there are new plantings in front of the Pumilia Townhouses on Madison Street.

The Bulletin Board in the Park got a new look (and a new coat of paint) yesterday!

****************************

Here are Jody Hildreth's most recent photographs of the Red-eyed Vireo and her chicks accompanied by his comments.

Please click on this image: What Photograph!

(All of the images are "clickable" - I just thought that this one was more spectacular than the rest.)

1 - baby cowbird up close and personal (a face only a mother could love)

2 - all the chicks - last vireo has hatched!

3 - feeding the youngest vireo

4 - checking on the chicks

5 - feed me! And me!

6 - taking care of the fecal sac - yes, it looked like she ate it!

7 - good size fly - but they aren't called flycatchers?

8 - making sure that fly goes down

9 - which chick gets it - vireo on left, cowbird on right

11 - cowbird wins - get used to it!

The "Ocean to Ocean" Endurance Race!"

Yesterday afternoon fifty-five Model T Fords - one from each state and five from other countries - came through town heading northward. This morning, after spending the night in Utica, they reversed course.

Some stopped at Stewart's or Nice 'n Easy before continuing their journey.

Today, alone - 232 miles at about 40 MPH.

Westward, Ho!

Click the image to read all about them and see where they're going!

Early in May, Rusty sent a super photograph of a pair of Bluebirds in Brookfield. This is the last of their chicks to leave the nest.

************

Here in Whiskey Hollow, Jody Hildreth was back on his twelve-foot stepladder, yesterday afternoon.

Now there's a Vireo baby in the nest, too!

... and another Vireo egg, but it looks as if the Cowbird mother may have intentionally damaged it to keep it from hatching.

Mother Vireo has brought a lovely little green worm for the two babies.

Yum!

She seemed to turn and look directly at Jody as if to ask, "Would you like one, too?"
