Today's Garbage Day!

It's 39 degrees and overcast.

The withdrawal of NYRI's Power Line Application made headlines on WKTV ,the Utica O-D and the Oneonta Daily Star. (Click the links for the stories.)

(Now we can take ALL of the signs down!)

This letter has come from a blog-reader in California!

"I read The Huddle all the time. Love Waterville, but live in San Francisco. (Married into a Waterville family) I saw the link and story about NYRI and I just wanted to mention that a similiar thing happened herea few years ago..... including the backing down because investors pulled out.
But new investors invigorated the vultures.

And two years later we were doing it all over again.
We had a local printer who had alot to lose so he printed the flyer and I walked the Mission District for a week putting flyers on doors. When the first meeting of the second round of vulturedom was held, the investors were flabbergasted that the community did not want the project (which involved demolishing about 60 blocks of homes in the city).
We were not polite. We told them to go away. We had almost every business person in the 60 block area present, shouting, and "in you face" with signs.
In less than 60 minutes the new round of investors had also renaged. It was one of the most exhilarating evenings of my life. No one has tried again....but they will, eventually.
Vigilance is needed, both here and in Waterville.

ANNMARIE PATTERSON

(Thank you, Annmarie!)

The Weather is also in the news: unfortunately ......

From WKTV: "An area of low pressure will pass directly overhead today, giving us a burst of heavy rain this morning. Make sure you grab the umbrella on the way out to work or school. The heavy rain will last until about noon, followed by scattered rain showers through the afternoon. Breezy and cloudy, with highs in the upper 40s."

"As the system pushes to the north & east, cold, Canadian air, will begin to filter in Monday night into Tuesday. Light rain will mix and eventually change over to snow by Tuesday morning for all spots. Some accumulating snow is possible late Tuesday into Wednesday. Accumulations are expected to be less than an inch in the valleys, with up to 2" in the hilltops."

In re: the "old" names for our streets - "Hooker Street," in particular ......

I've dug and dug through all of the historical material that I have available, and have finally come to this conclusion ---- which will be either reassuring or disappointing, depending on your sense of humor. Based on:

1. a comment in the 1851 History of the Town of Marshall, that "Jared I. Hooker was one of the early settlers of the township" (around, if not before 1800)

2. the earliest maps of this area --- 1852 and 1858,

3. an 1857 legal notice in The Waterville Times describing some property,

.............. it appears that Hooker Street was originally named that because it was the road that led to a farm (on the north side of the township line) owned by the Hooker Family. By 1857, Jared Hooker had died and the farm belonged to someone else, but some of his children were still in the area and the name stuck until after Civil War General Hooker had made a name for himself and his "camp followers" and/or the Bacon family bought land on the East side of the highway.

Thank you for the many, many letters and telephone calls from blog-readers who supported my decision to remove comment capability from the blog - at least temporarily. This is not the place for the uncalledfor rudeness that was being displayed by the writers who signed their comments "Anonymous." There remains the question of how to handle letters that have been sent directly to me - all well-written and signed - by writers who would like their opinions known: I'll find some solution.

Now go and Have a Great Day!
