I'm sorry that I forgot to "blog" a reminder to watch for the Perseids. I did get up at 4:00 this morning, but didn't see any meteors at all. Perhaps tonight!

I took a ride over to Vernon Center, yesterday afternoon, looking for the field of sunflowers
that we all enjoyed three years ago, but they weren't there. Just a big field of weeds.

Darn.

It's 65 degrees and here is the WKTV weather forecast as of last evening:

"A warm weather week on the way.
Thunderstorms will weaken overnight as muggy conditions remain in place. Overnight lows 65-70. Sun and clouds and the chance of a brief thunderstorm for our Tuesday. High in the lower 80's.

Sunshine and seasonably warm weather will return for the middle and end of the week."

I hope that WKTV's prediction of BRIEF thunderstorms is correct: neither my flowerbeds nor any of the local farm crops need any more rain!

Dan Maine and his crew were working on the roof of the Wright residence on White Street.

Farther up White Street, scraping or painting is taking place.




Kent Cole pondered a project at the old library building on Main Street, soon to be the home of the Waterville Historical Society.

Mike and Blake were back in the Park.

With a hot, humid afternoon in the forecast, keep in mind the fact that the new Livbrary is air conditioned and, today at 3:00 and 6:00 you can enjoy a few extra "chills" by watching Jimmy Stewart and Kim Novak in Alfred Hitchcock's classic thriller, "Vertigo," in which a San Francisco detective suffering from acrophobia investigates the strange activities of an old friend's wife, all the while becoming dangerously obsessed with her.

"Rusty" chided me, yesterday, for not posting the ball scores - the Sox have been in such a slide that my friends and relatives in Massachusetts are in noticable states of depression! (I must have the benefit of age: the team's been there before, and they always manage to come back.)

He also sent me some more beauties from his garden: a great start to anyone's day!

WKTV's meteorologist predicts that: "....we will make a run for the warmest day of summer so far as we sit in between the warm front and cold front. Hazy, humid and hot with temperatures climbing into the upper 80s, but it will feel like the low to mid 90s. With the heat, humidity and sunshine, we will once again have the threat for pop up showers and thunderstorms Monday afternoon. Some of these thunderstorms may be on the strong side with gusty winds and small hail.

Relief of the humidity will be brought in by a cold front on Tuesday. Tuesday starts off dry but showers and thunderstorms will develop out ahead of the cold front in the afternoon. Highs in the low 80s. Behind the front, drier and more comfortable weather for the rest of the week."

At first it looked as if they might have dropped in for some firewood at Tom & T.O.M.s .....


........."but it turned out that they had run into high winds on top of the hill and came down into the valley and finally had to land - right here in Forge Hollow!"

We had some pretty interesting thunder and lightning during the night, and it looks - and sounds - as if more is on the way.



It's time to turn off my computer, I think, and put the garbage out before the rain rather than during!

But before I hit "publish," I want to thank ALL of you who volunteered to type or who wrote suggesting various softwear that would convert PDFs to text. Sheri Brennan got the first "assignment" and, in less than an hour had turned out the text of an article that Patty Louise had spotted a few weeks ago: a 1909 essay on the history of Waterville that had some really neat things in it that I'd ever read about, before! I'll update some references and then post that on Heaps of History! Thanks loads, Sheri!!!

Just a "mini-post!"

"No internet??? Oh, No!!!"

At least that's what I said to myself at 5:30, this morning.

And so, I sorted some old pictures and typed some history - checking, every few minutes, to see whether or not a voice would say, "You've got mail!" Yes, I DID call Frontier, and a nice young lady declared that there was no outage, but did I believe her? (Not really!) And - so - (again) I sorted and typed more and then finally decided that it really was just a teeny bit possible that the "outage" actually wasn't in the Frontier system, but somewhere in my modem ..........

So - before packing up the laptop to go to Nice 'n Easy, I spent all of thirty seconds unplugging and replugging and ............. to my great embarrassment but total delight, magic happened!

My apologies to Frontier for thinking ill of them!

Anyhow - I'm late. But I have this one very important announcement to post:

I only took one picture, yesterday - this, of scraping in progress at an old apartment house on Stafford Avenue. The improvement will be fun to watch!

Mike Tower will be back in the Park, today, so you can watch the Bandstand grow, too!

The lilies in the Library Garden must be at their peak.

I've never seen anyone working in the garden and began to wonder if, in fact, elves come in the night to pull weeds.

Not so, I was told: some of Mr. Zwahlen's crew come quite regularly, during the day, to see to all of the flowerbeds, there.

Heading into the weekend, WKTV's forecast sounds good: "Bonus weather continues today and tomorrow, with some changes as we head into Sunday. Another chilly start to the day, with temperatures in the 40s and 50s. Just like yesterday, once the sun comes out this morning temperatures will quickly rise. With high pressure still in control, it will be another beautiful day! Expect lots of sunshine, with highs in the low to mid 70s. A bit of a breeze will develop in the afternoon too. Crystal clear skies tonight, with temperatures diving into the 40s by sunrise tomorrow. More sunshine expected on Saturday morning and early afternoon, with highs in the mid 70s. Things will start to change as the head into the second half of the day as a warm front begins to approach. Clouds will roll in by the end of the day, and we do run the risk of a shower or thunderstorm after 8 PM. Warm returns by Sunday along with the chance of a few thunderstorms. Temperatures are expected to be in the mid 80s both Sunday and Monday. Next week's weather looks to be near or a bit above normal, with highs in the low 80s and overnight lows in the low 60s."
