WKTV's forecast: "Quiet weather continues tomorrow with a sunny start to the day. Clouds begin to thicken up by mid afternoon into the evening, out ahead of an approaching storm system. Highs on Wednesday in the upper 70s.

That storm system will kick off showers and thunderstorms as a warm front crosses the state on Wednesday Night and Thursday. Highs Thursday will be in the upper 60's, but humidity will increase and a muggy feel to the air will be in the forecast for Thursday Night into Friday."

In the morning mail was a plea for help from the resident of 178 W. Bacon Street whose rusty, orange wheelbarrow has disappeared!

"I used the wheelbarrow yesterday for green waste day since everything has to be in containers. However I went to the front yard this morning and my garbage can I used was still there but someone had taken my wheelbarrow. I wasn't throwing it out but merely using it as a "container" which I had done many times before."

Perhaps there's a blog reader who can make the wheelbarrow reappear just as magically as it left!? It's return will be appreciated, I'm sure!

COMING SOON, RAIN OR SHINE

The Waterville Eagles Pop Warner program is holding its second registration for the 2009 season from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 18 at the High School.

Registration is for area youth interested in participating in either football or cheerleading. Boys and girls between the ages of 5 and 13 by July 31, 2009 are eligible to participate in one of four levels of play. Registration fees range from $35 to $45.

For information regarding the football program, contact Aaron Meddaugh at 315-368-4405. For information regarding the cheerleading program, contact Cindy Beach at 315-861-2161.

First it was back yard dividers, then came sidewalks, and now there are new plantings in front of the Pumilia Townhouses on Madison Street.


The Bulletin Board in the Park got a new look (and a new coat of paint) yesterday!

The "Ocean to Ocean" Endurance Race!"




Yesterday afternoon fifty-five Model T Fords - one from each state and five from other countries - came through town heading northward. This morning, after spending the night in Utica, they reversed course.


Some stopped at Stewart's or Nice 'n Easy before continuing their journey.

Today, alone - 232 miles at about 40 MPH.

Early in May, Rusty sent a super photograph of a pair of Bluebirds in Brookfield. This is the last of their chicks to leave the nest.

Here in Whiskey Hollow, Jody Hildreth was back on his twelve-foot stepladder, yesterday afternoon.

Now there's a Vireo baby in the nest, too!

... and another Vireo egg, but it looks as if the Cowbird mother may have intentionally damaged it to keep it from hatching.



Mother Vireo has brought a lovely little green worm for the two babies.



Yum!

She seemed to turn and look directly at Jody as if to ask, "Would you like one, too?"

Monday morning

It's Garbage Day!

50 degrees and nice out!

I'm off to spend some "vacation" time with my daughter and grandson, but want to keep all of you birders up-to-date. We have a baby! - and here are five of the pictures that Jody took yesterday and his remarks. (Be sure to click on the images!)

Jody said that he could see signs that one of the vireo eggs was hatching. I'm sure he'll be back as soon as he can, this afternoon!

"Mack and I took a ride up to Lake Placid to watch son Rob run his first 1/2 marathon. There were about 2,000 participants running either a 1/2 or full marathon. Mack got to ride along in an electric cart so he was right in the middle of things. The first pic is of Rob with a couple of his fellow Skidmore alum buddies. Middle is of Mack in the electric cart and our friend Jim McKenna who is the CEO of Lake Placid's visitor's bureau. The last one was a surprise sighting of Karen Studdard who lives in O'Falls and works at Waterville's Fitness Center. She ran the 1/2 while her husband ran the full. Gorgeous weather -- have to tell you the lupine were incredible along the roadside coming up route 28 through old Forge all the way to Blue Mtn.! Worth taking a ride up... beware of the black flies -- saw people with their netting on! "

Five or six families of Canada Geese just about fill the little pond on Sangerhill Road east of Bogan Road.


Soy, planted next to Fuess-Cleary Road on May 25, is up!

Look what else is "up!" Mary Ann and Gary Ford sent this picture of a fairly new beaver dam next to the Marshall Trail at Burnham Road!

Jody Hildreth makes daily visits to the Hollow.


Mother Vireo, who spends most of her time just keeping the four eggs warm or making quick excursions for a bite of food or to bring back some more nesting material, seems to have gotten used to having him around.

We've received Email urging us to remove the cowbird egg, but - while we'd both like to see the three little vireos survive - Jody and I both know that there is no shortage of vireos and agree that the best documentation will be to watch and follow as Nature takes its course.

In the meantime, there always seems to be a phoebe watching from a shovel handle!
