It's Recyclables Day!

FARMERS MARKET OPENS!

The WKTV forecast: "A frontal boundary has stalled to our south and will serve as a focusing mechanism for showers and thunderstorms. The front is far enough to the south to keep most of the shower activity out of Central New York. The only exception would be for the southern valleys . For today, expect partly to mostly cloudy skies with highs in the mid to upper 60s.

Skies will clear out tonight, as drier air builds in from the north. Lows in the low 40s.

A great weather pattern sets up for the end of the week. An area of high pressure will keep skies sunny, with temperatures returning to seaonal averages, in the 70s on Thursday and Friday. The only potential fly in the ointment is an area of tropical storminess that is expected to pass south and east of the region. It may steer close enough to give us a few extra clouds late Thursday and early Friday.

Warmer weather will slowly trickle in through the weekend, with highs creeping into the mid 70s by Saturday.

In this morning's Observer-Dispatch, a brief notice of the death of Harold "Buster" Davis, who passed away in Florida on Monday and whose funeral will take place here, in Waterville, on Thursday evening.

The first place that I went to take pictures, yesterday, was the most-recently proposed site of the Informational Kiosk at the corner of Sanger Avenue and Madison Street.

First, as I headed west on Madison .............

Every time I drive out Sanger Avenue I have the same thought: it looks as if a it were a municipal "parkway" cared for by a professional crew!




The whole village looks as well cared for as any around here, thanks partly to regular sweeping by the DPW..........

Tuesday - Add-on for Rusty!

It's BIG TRASH day!

57.2 degrees.

WKTV's meteorologist predicts that: " ..... a weak area of high pressure will promote sunshine across the area. Look for afternoon temperatures to climb into the upper 60's.

Another storm system will approach the area for midweek. We'll see an increase in clouds tomorrow night with a good chance for a period of rain on Wednesday. Look for highs 60-65.

As an area of high pressure settles just to our east by the end of the week look for sunshine and warmer temperatures to return.

There may be a decision - soon!

At last evening's Village Board Meeting, DPW Superintendent Jamie Bechy (saying that it was really Lou Langone's idea!) proposed placing the informational kiosk in a location that had not been suggested, before, but which seemed to "fill the bill" in that it is:

• on Village property
• is level and not cluttered with underground wires or pipes
• the structure would not create a traffic hazard
• there is safe parking space for passing motorists and
• the site is easily accessible to pedestrians.

The site is a sizable "bump-out" at the junction of Rt. 12 and Madison Street, adjacent to but not part of Monument Park. (I'll take pictures later today.)

At any rate, the proposal was met with many smiles and expressions of agreement. No final decision was made, but it looks hopeful!

Even better....... (and Dick would be so pleased!)

Dave Carlson of Carlson Associates of Cooperstown, planner and grant-writer, was at the meeting to schedule a conference with the Planning Board, Mayor and Board of Trustees.

Finally, a Comprehensive (or "Master") Plan is in the works for Waterville!

Rhododendrons (from the Greek: rhodos, "rose", and dendron, "tree") are blooming! These are at the Woodhouse residence on Madison Street and there are more right across the road at the Murphys' and throughout the village, as well.

It's Garbage Day!

34.4 degrees, brisk but sunny.

WKTV predicts that: "Monday will start off with mostly sunny skies but sunshine will fade behind clouds that are out ahead of our next storm system. Clouds and showers move in by the evening and into the overnight. Temperatures will warm up a little bit with highs will return to the 60s. Unsettled weather continues for the middle of the week as a cold front stalls to our south, giving us a chance of showers and unseasonably cool temperatures."

One flowerbed that survived last night's chill was at the Aldridges' on Madison Street.

Yesterday turned out to be a fine day to be outdoors!

A member of the Waterville Garden Club reported that their Annual Sale was "the best ever!"

The owners will be having the structure taken down by Zielinski Asphalt and have donated the building to the Fire Department for training exercises.

The "Old Folks' Story Swap" at the Library, last Friday morning,
was a huge success!

Reminiscences included anecdotes about a clever brick-layer who imbedded a pane of glass at the top of a new chimney if he hadn't been paid, and only broke it after smoke had filled the house and money was in his hand;

recollections of William Cary Sanger, Jr., Bobby Lawson and Truman Jones by those who knew them and also of the Tyler family and Hilda Barton;

stories of the great fires of 1929 and 1982, when buildings on Main Street were destroyed;

Memorial Day gatherings at the "Ye Olde American" hotel and the excitement of having the Circus come to town.


Thanks to Director Jeff Reynolds and his assistant, Jillian Getman, more such gatherings will be taking place at the Library on alternate Fridays throughout the next several weeks.

If you have stories to tell, join us!

It became obvious, right away, that a method of making digital recordings of these events must be worked out so that stories can be saved and shared with younger generations!

Can any blog-readers suggest a particular piece/brand of equipment for that?
